The “9 to 15 availabilities of my directs” need is just screaming my insecurity.
Big organisations hide behind “quick IM responses” trading Accountability for availability.
As a leader my job is to create trust and help put tension on the promise and accountability for that.
urgent availability is not needed if trust and a flow/process exist.

I must ask myself. What have I done or not done as a leader to make this an urgent.
What can I do so the cost I force upon my team so my urgent forcing them to context switch is reduced for next time?

What you are unaware of control you

Current organisations are shaped by their IT tools way more than we are aware of
The context switching has a huge cost. What might have been with deep work and focused effort versus everyone is a generalist pinging everyone.

I as a leader must own my own insecurity and ask myself. WHY do my need of an answer now outweigh the cost of context switching for the individual I’m disturbing.
Why have not I or organisation not setup a Kanban and processes to make this process work without personal distractions? Why have we build this process/not built this process leaving important knowledge in the heads of performers?

 

Work to minimise and reduce unscheduled messages

or update processes to reduce unscheduled messages so people can focus on results Avoid/redesign on an Organisational level

Reduce context switching – it leaves everyone involved anxious

Cost of delay

Organisational and individual levelup at a higher pace than becoming a commodity

Create space for experiment

Constantly ask ourselves. Is this a great way for “human brain collaborates to add value to information”?
